Sustained by

Knowing spring is round the corner.

 

No such certainty

In human affairs.

 

The hot passion,

The felt liberation

And social upheavals of

The sixties

Drowned in blood

Assassination and war.

 

Global warming?

For many, a frozen storm.

 

We worked to matter.

Teeth chattering

Optimism challenged by

Setbacks, disappointment and betrayal.

 

Will it ever happen?

Will the storm thaw,

The grey curtain part?

 

Just last week,

On Fifth Avenue,

Jackie asked Nick what philosophy

Sustained him?

“Democracy – the possibility that

Americans can work together for the common good.

That existential gloom can be dispelled.”
