No solid ground.

Clouds and rain.

Climate change?

New challenges

And old problems.

As old as poverty, racism,

Self interest and greed.

We can produce a vaccine 

that counters covid.

But cannot get it where

It’s needed most.

Is this a lament?

Perhaps.

And one

Thing is undeniable.

Some say “me too”

But “me first” still rules.

With friends at dinner,

The issue of Woody Allen came up.

I found myself defending him.

Here’s why.

As children of the sixties,

We challenged boundaries

in love and politics.

Political correctness

(No substitute for 

Political courage)

Stifles creativity

in thought and love.

To say “me too.”

To condemn and cancel,

Is safer than initmacy, audacity

Freedom and development.

Where is the line between

Sexuality and perversion?

Who draws it?

Best Friends

I wasn’t

progressive

conservative

politically conscious

or astute

I was a little child

but I knew about best friends.

My parents received a letter

offering me a chance to transfer

to a better school

a white school

I wouldn’t go.

A Memory

We held hands

walking home from school

swaying back and forth

bumping shoulders.

Best friends

very, very smart

our science project:

astronauts.

We painted the round fish bowl

shiny silver

but only had toy soldiers

as astronauts.

Then

Kennedy was assassinated.

We stopped.
